The news of the fire that destroyed Shuri (Shuri Castle) on October 31st, 2019 was such as tragedy.
The original castle was largely destroyed in the battle of Okinawa in 1945. The buildings were reconstructed and the Castle became a major tourist destination and location to see some of the magnificent history of the Okinawa Ryukyu kingdom. In 2000 the original Castle ruins and relics where declared as a World heritage site.
Here are some photos from my visit to the Castle just about 10 years ago.
I visited Shurijo on January 1st, 2010 for the Chohai-Okishiki (Shuri Castle New Years Festival) festival. A re-enactment of the New Years morning ceremony by the Royal Court of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Okinawan folk and classical dances were also performed on a stage outside the main courtyard.
